Symptoms of Liver Disease
If you've already been warned by your doctor that you're at
risk for liver disease, you'll want to know more about the
symptoms of liver disease so that you can observe your health
and report to your physician as soon as you see that something
is not quite right. Here are some of the symptoms to watch out
for, as well as some of the things you can do to start
rebuilding your health.
In the early stages of liver disease, you may find fatigue
is one of the main symptoms of liver disease. If you notice
that your energy level is fairly normal in the morning, but you
run out of 'steam' in the middle of the day, this could be a
sign of liver disease--especially if you don't feel refreshed
or restored after sleep.
Itching of the skin is another one of the symptoms of liver
disease. So, if you notice that your arms, legs, or back have
been itching quite commonly, making an appointment with your
doctor may be in order. The itching may also become worse at
night, and if you find that you are waking up in the middle of
the night due to the itching, it's time to start finding out
what you can do to reduce your symptoms.
If you haven't experienced any of these symptoms of liver
disease, you may want to pay special attention to your eyes and
mouth if you are still trying to cut down on your alcohol
consumption. Sicca syndrome, or dry mouth and eyes, could be an
indication that liver disease is trying to settle in in your
body. The moisture secreting glands of the eyes and mouth
become inflamed, and you may find that only certain types of
eye drops or constantly drinking water will only provide
temporary relief.
In the later stages of liver disease, the symptoms become
worse, and if you notice any of these, you'll need to meet with
your doctor right away for the specific purpose of finding
medications and treatments that are going to be best for you.
Jaundice, which is the yellowing the eyes and skin, is one of
the definite symptoms of liver disease; this is an indication
that the bilirubin that is supposed to be carried out of the
liver by the bile is still in the body, and is being secreted
through the pores. Your skin may also become darker as a result
of hyperpigmentation, so if you see that the areas of your body
that are not exposed to the sun are becoming colored, be sure
to see your doctor right away.
